Students of flood affected schools continue learning online
Balete, Batangas in Luzon, Philippines was met with unprecedented flooding during the onslaught of Typhoon Kristine. REVZTEL through unconnected.org established Free WiFi in the vicinity of Looc Elementary School to allow students to be online, and access learning modules on the internet.
The community around the school was heavily affected by the typhoon, aggravated by flooding, unheard of in recent history. The town is still mourning the loss of lives and has committed to residents to build back better.
This first-hand disaster experience fueled several students to flock the connectivity site and access educational content while the school is being readied to be re-opened. Properties may be washed away, but not the learning and knowledge, said a young learner in vernacular.
REVZTEL hopes to partner with other schools to address the connectivity gap, given reports of degraded services from commercial telecommunications operators in the area.
