Bantayan Island School Gets Connected, More Underway

Madridejos Central Elementary School located at the Island of Bantayan, Cebu, in Visayas, Philippines is the latest educational institution to be connected, thanks to SparkWave, a member-partner of unconnected.org.

Known for its pristine beaches, Bantayan Island ticks off characteristics of an unplugged paradise for tourists - slow internet with limited to no signal coverage. While this connectivity detox attracts some, the same is the day-to-day experience of learners and students, and it has proven to be detrimental to their education.

With satellite internet, schools then get instant access to online course material and other web-based learning applications. Communities around the school are able to connect to the internet as well affordably, as supported by the infrastructure and mesh network set-up by SparkWave; this way, the school's connectivity is maintained free, subsidized by leisure internet users.

This community model of supporting free educational connectivity is unconnected.org’s model being introduced to rural and far-flung communities, otherwise without financial capacity to subscribe to satellite internet individually.

SparkWave says there are more schools underway to be transformed into digital learning centers with the introduction of internet and access to online learning.
