Exploring Digital Solutions: Community Networks Roundtable Highlights Impact Marketplace

Together with Internet Society (ISOC), the Asia Pacific Network Information Center (APNIC), and the Philippine Network Operators’ Group (PhNOG), unconnected.org co-organises a roundtable discussion on community networks with various stakeholders in the ecosystem including local Internet service providers (ISP), policy-makers and technology organisations.

Jessieca Baris, Technology and Operations Manager of unconnected.org shared about the opportunities for participation in the Impact Marketplace, a one-stop portal among practitioners, providers and even beneficiary communities to explore and offer connectivity, financing and hardware solutions, launch social impact-driven initiatives, and cultivate partnerships with network and system integrators.

Among the participants are representatives from the Institute of Social Entrepreneurship in Asia (ISEA), the Asia Pacific Network Information Center (APNIC) Foundation, and Philippine Cable and Telecommunications Association (PCTA).

The dialogue on community-centered connectivity also touched upon discussions related to the newly enacted Konektadong Pinoy Act (KPA), that removes legislative franchise requirements for entities intending to offer internet services, most especially in rural and remote communities.

Naveed Haq, Senior Director for Infrastructure and Connectivity, Internet Society, said “Connect the unconnected people”

In geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA), community networks are becoming increasingly relevant as it allows for democratisation of access to the Internet but also leverages available technology options such as the combination of satellite backhaul and wireless and fibre distribution.

For unconnected.org, schools are the organic connectivity hubs in these communities, with free access provided to both students and teachers. In the surrounding area, voucher-based or subscription-based affordable connectivity is offered by duly registered internet service providers, soon to be recognised as Data Transmission Industry Participants (DTIP) as the implementing rules and regulations of the KPA takes effect.
