Students from the province facing west Philippines sea - now surfing

Students from 10 schools in Zambales, the epicenter of one of the most destructive volcanic eruptions in Philippine recent history, are now enabled to surf the web.

The satellite internet deployed by Ayala Foundation Inc. powered by unconnected.org allows both learners and teachers to access educational content, do online research and participate in internet-based activities.

While the province of Zambales faces the sea, it is remembered by many as where lahar (pyroclastic mudflow) ensued devastation throughout the years after the Mt. Pinatubo eruption, rendering agricultural fields barren.

Developments have recently found its way into the province with the conversion of these crop fields to solar farms, yet access to the internet still remains to be a challenge in its most remote areas.

Through this connectivity initiative, several educational tools are likewise to be provided to schools such as support for coding, training on online safety and modules on digital literacy. unconnected.org and Ayala Foundation Inc. will continue to work together to cover other areas, and promote sustainable community networks.
