Press Release: CVISNET and unconnected.org Partner to Transform Educational Connectivity in the Philippines

Cebu, Philippines - 23 July 2024 – The Central Visayas Information Sharing Network (CVISNET) and unconnected.org join forces in a groundbreaking partnership to revolutionise digital connectivity for underserved communities across the Philippines. This collaboration aims to bridge the digital divide and unlock socio-economic development in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA).

A Legacy of Connection

Founded in the 1990s as a Department of Science and Technology (DOST) project, CVISNET has been a Philippine internet pioneer. Jeffrey Llanto, with over 15 years of experience at DOST, has been instrumental in connecting the Philippines and continues to champion community empowerment through technology. CVISNET collaborates with various organisations, including education and labor departments, local governments, and government-owned corporations, to educate them on the internet's benefits and applications.

An Impactful Partnership

The partnership with unconnected.org marks a significant milestone for CVISNET. Supported by USAID, this collaboration focuses on delivering sustainable Internet solutions to remote areas through innovative methods like the ISLET Connect project, in partnership with the APNIC Foundation. This initiative leverages advanced technologies to provide stable Internet access to island communities, schools, and local populations.

The partnership with unconnected.org marks a significant milestone for CVISNET. Facilitated by USAID, this collaboration aims to deliver sustainable internet solutions to remote areas with a focus on enabling digital education solutions through innovative methods. unconnected.org's expertise will be crucial in this endeavor.

"unconnected.org is a blessing to us," said Jeffrey Llanto. "Our missions perfectly align, striving to provide connectivity and digital resources to the most underserved areas. This partnership allows us to extend our solutions, connect schools to free access to connectivity and advocacy to these remote islands."

Bridging the Divide with Innovation

One of the partnership's standout initiatives is aside from the free school connectivity the deployment of community Internet facilities called Coin facilities. These facilities offer affordable and accessible internet access during and  after school hours. This ensures connectivity for community members, including fishermen and students, even in areas with unstable electricity.

Community Impact

The impact on connected communities is undeniable. Schools now have access to digital learning systems, significantly improving education quality. Community members can stay informed and connected, crucial during natural disasters and for economic activities like eco-tourism and seaweed farming.

Empowering the Future

CVISNET and unconnected.org are committed to expanding their efforts and bringing digital connectivity to more remote areas. This partnership not only enhances education and economic opportunities but also strengthens the resilience of these communities.
