Escaping Ukraine - Part 3

While in Chernivtsi and using what little internet connectivity was available, Volodymyr and his sister worked on a plan over a stumbling internet connection. Luda found an elderly couple in Surrey, England, with a big house and spare bedrooms, they were happy to sponsor the family to come to England. The couple was able to interview Volodymyr and meet the children in advance. Without video conferencing, the sponsorship may not have been secured.

Volodymyr and his family's hosts could not have been more accommodating, and with the help of his sister, Luda, the family settled into their new surroundings quickly. However, the children spoke little or no English, creating everyday challenges as they started attending the local schools and a nursery. Imagine having to leave your home, nearly everyone you know and your school, and come to a strange country where virtually nobody speaks your language. With the support of unconnected.orgSurrey Stands With Ukraine, a local charity, and Techfugees, a thriving community helping refugees, the family were given SIM cards with free data and tablet devices. They were able to digitally connect with other Ukrainians to share experiences, alleviate some stresses and integrate more quickly into their new environment.
