Why is access to internet important for refugees

We are working to bridge the digital divide under 4 core themes:

  1. Connecting Women

  2. Connecting Students

  3. Connecting Refugees

  4. Connecting Underserved communities

In this blog post we will cover 5 reasons why we selected “Connecting Refugees” to be on of our main themes to focus on when it comes to digital equity.

We have seen the impact of connectivity first hand as our team worked on the border of Ukraine last year (You can read more about that project here!) to connect the families crossing the border.

Access to the internet is important for refugees for several reasons:

  1. Access to Information: The internet provides refugees with access to vital information, such as news updates, legal information, and information about resettlement services. This information can help refugees make informed decisions about their future and improve their ability to navigate the complex resettlement process.

  2. Communication: The internet allows refugees to stay in touch with loved ones and connect with support networks. This is particularly important for refugees who have been separated from family members during the resettlement process.

  3. Education: The internet provides refugees with access to online learning resources, which can help them improve their language skills and access educational opportunities. We are working currently to enable access to local curriculum in refugee centers

  4. Employment: The internet is an essential tool for job searching, particularly in today's digital job market. By providing refugees with access to the internet, they are better equipped to find employment opportunities and secure their financial independence.

  5. Mental Health: The internet provides refugees with access to mental health resources, such as online counseling services and support groups. This can help refugees cope with the trauma and stress associated with displacement and resettlement.

In summary, access to the internet is important for refugees because it provides them with essential information, communication tools, educational opportunities, employment opportunities, and mental health resources. By providing refugees with access to the internet, we can help them rebuild their lives and improve their prospects for the future.
