Empowering Jomalig Island Students: KioBytes Expands Free Internet Access with unconnected.org
KioBytes, a local ISP at the remote island of Jomalig, Quezon, Philippines has expanded its provision of free internet access, powered by unconnected.org, to several more schools to-date, including Bukal Elementary School, Talisoy National High School, Gango Elementary School, Apad Elementary School and Apad National High School.
The island where all the schools are situated is located off the coast of Quezon Province, Philippines. It has an airstrip but no commercial airline flies, hence making a 6 hour boat ride the exclusive means by which anyone can reach or leave the island.
KioBytes hurdled the extent of geographical isolation and offered free connectivity to all schools. “The partnership with unconnected.org is essential in carrying out this mission,” said Mike Arucan of KioBytes.
The local ISP utilized its fiber deployment to enable connectivity at schools, with satellite as backhaul as commercial mobile telecommunications services are unavailable in the area. With this model, affordable connectivity is offered by the local ISP at other locations in the island.
