KioBytes, with unconnected.org, Brings Free Internet to Remote Jomalig Island Schools
KioBytes, a local ISP, established connectivity for Jomalig Central Elementary School located at an island at the eastern side of the Philippines, reachable by a 6 hour boat ride from the mainland.
Jomalig Island directly faces the Pacific Ocean and is first to experience the effects of typhoons brewing in the area. Coupled to its remote location, telecommunications services are unreliable to non-existent, leading students and residents alike to advocate for means to connecting to the Internet.
Through the model of unconnected.org enabling schools with Internet, as supported by the community, KioBytes has expanded its services to cover key localities with affordable connectivity services.
According to the local ISP, such an implementation requires satellite internet technology which is not only quick to deploy but works well and very reliable.
Since then, students are enabled to freely access the internet and do complementary learning online, while teachers use connectivity to explore content and fulfil required reports.
