SHFC and unconnected.org Empower 2,100 Resettled Families in Laguna

The Philippines’ Social Housing and Finance Corporation recently led the inauguration and turnover of a facility with a full capacity of 2,100 resettled families.

Nestled near the bay, in Calamba, Laguna, south of Manila, the social housing complex was developed by SHFC to accommodate families living nearby tracks and railroads across the city covered by the south commuter railway project.

For many, jumpstarting livelihood is essential as they transition to a new residence, further away from the bustling city. However, with connectivity a challenge, the SHFC has partnered with unconnected.org to ensure that digital opportunities are made available to residents.

Free WiFi was set-up by REVZTEL, a local ISP operating in the city, powered by unconnected.org, in the community’s multipurpose hall and nearby areas. This allows for families to access connectivity at no cost while at designated areas.

Bernard Revaldo of REVZTEL shared “...with connectivity, opportunities for livelihood, education and improved healthcare are within reach.”

Affordable internet is soon to be made available once the appropriate support infrastructure is installed, so displaced learners can continue schooling at home while being assimilated to the community.

There are several other social housing facilities to be unveiled according to SHFC. As connectivity is central to letting residents embrace their new homes, “...unconnected.org and their partners should be there,” said Philip Robert C. Flores, SHFC Vice President.
