Students from GIDA schools supported by local operator
Kabankalan Cable TV (KCAT) has added four schools in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA), in Negros Occidental, Visayas, Philippines under its belt of supported learning institutions.
KCAT is a member-partner of unconnected.org and is a Cable TV (CATV) operator committed to promoting countryside development and meaningful access to the Internet.
The project was undertaken by KCAT in collaboration with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Sipalay to bring connectivity to GIDA schools, namely Cabadiangan High School, Manlucahoc High School, Vista Alegre Integrated School, and Cayhagan High School
It is primarily aimed to support learning by opening up opportunities to complement classroom education with online content.
“At a time when the education system of the Philippines is overwhelmed, the internet will help students and teachers supplement in- classroom learning better preparing our learners for the real world” said Joel Dabao, CEO of KCAT.
The local CATV operator is in discussion with the ICT Council of Sipalay and the DICT Provincial Office to further enrich the learning environment of students in these four remote schools, through digital literacy programs and several other initiatives.
