Over 40 Remote Sites in Mindanao Now Connected to Free Internet Through LEO Satellite Technology
More than 40 sites in Sultan Kudarat, Mindanao, Philippines were provided free internet access through low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology.
Deployment sites are classified as Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA) where traditional telecommunications coverage is unlikely to be available nor reliable.
Driven primarily for social impact, the collaboration between unconnected.org and Wireless Link Technologies Inc (WLTI) through their ISP partner, Sonic Networks PHL Inc (SNPI), is a testament to how connectivity is a necessity especially for students and teachers alike in rural and remote areas.
“We are to cover more schools in Mindanao and expand into Visayas in upcoming roll-outs, enabling more learners to access the Internet for free,” said Ralph Waldy Soguilon, CEO, WLTI and SNPI.
There are more GIDAs in the Philippines yet to be covered. Opportunity for growth in the data transmission space is expected to grow in the next few years with the Philippines' hallmark legislation on Konektadong Pinoy, allowing local providers to register with the regulator to offer Internet primarily in unserved and underserved areas.
