Providing affordable access to rural communities around schools
More than 70 rural communities in Mindanao, Philippines get access to affordable connectivity through the efforts of Innovations Solutions, a member-partner of unconnected.org.
In the model, schools represent the core where community networks are established. They act as hubs where students can access Free WiFi to enhance their classroom learning, while surrounding communities are offered secured and affordable wireless connectivity.
Social impact is the primary objective to these implementations, with the aspect of sustainability espoused to ensure the connectivity program will run for students to continue using the Internet.
As these areas remain challenged with commercial telecommunications coverage, satellite internet technology is all the more essential in the quest for bridging the digital divide in the countryside. Local operators are likewise key to championing and addressing the needs in the area.
With these community networks, unserved and underserved communities are provided the opportunity to access the Internet and explore alternative livelihood options, engage in online education, and avail of public e-government services.
